TOUCHED BY ČIURLIONIS

Druskininkai – Lithuania's Capital of Culture 2025 welcomes the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. He is undoubtedly the most universal and prominent Lithuanian genius of all time, and throughout the year, the town will resonate with the highest notes of artistry. Čiurlionis stands as a symbol of our national art, rooted in the deepest wellsprings of native culture and shaped by the hues of the landscape and the melodies of folk songs.

SYMPHONY OF DREAMS. PART 1. METAMORPHOSES OF CULTURAL HARMONIES

The first part of the symphony is based on multilayered interactions: interdisciplinary activities, projects, and contemporary technologies will embody the profound concepts of artistic harmony, catharsis, and metamorphosis. It will facilitate cultural partnerships across cities, regions, and different fields, support the growth of creative industries, and promote collaboration between diverse sectors. The first part of the symphony unites contrasting episodes while maintaining the continuity of creative development. It highlights the most significant, large-scale, and innovative events and phenomena of the year.

SYMPHONY OF DREAMS. PART 2. THE INFINITE EXPANSE OF SOUNDS

The second part of the "Symphony of Dreams" will be dedicated to sounds and infused with musical events. It will be powered by and intertwined with an inexhaustible source of life: the creative work and life of the great artist Čiurlionis. The concert programmes will place special emphasis on the youngest talents, providing them with opportunities to showcase and refine their skills. Throughout the year, the finest musicians, orchestras, and ensembles from Lithuania and abroad will share their mastery in professional music concerts and sacral music sessions.

SYMPHONY OF DREAMS. PART 3. UNEXPECTED PARADIGMS OF TONES

The third part of the "Symphony of Dreams", Paradigms of Tones, will explore a diverse array of creative disciplines. Creators, artists, and artisans will be encouraged to immerse themselves in the diversity of colors, sounds, and forms of the natural world in Čiurlionis’ city, and to interpret it in their own way, transforming it into works of art that could attain lasting value. This part will attempt to provoke the convergence of the stylistics of traditional genres with contemporary technologies and modern art syntheses.

SYMPHONY OF DREAMS. PART 4. MUSICAL HORIZONS OF COLOURS

The fourth part of the "Symphony of Dreams" is inspired by the philosophy of M. K. Čiurlionis, who believed that a person’s spiritual depth, intellectual capacity, understanding and knowledge of the world, along with the ability to 'unlock' the meanings encoded in works of art, essentially reveals the history of humanity’s development and the evolution of ideas.

SYMPHONY OF DREAMS. PART 5. CODA. MEDITATIONS ON INSPIRATION

In the fifth part of the "Symphony of Dreams," the legacy and influence of M. K. Čiurlionis as a creator and the greatest Druskininkai "influencer" of all time will be solidified for those who live, create, and consume culture in the region, while also deepening the meaning of Lithuania's Capital of Culture title.

TOUCHED BY ČIURLIONIS

Druskininkai – Lithuania’s Capital of Culture 2025 welcomes the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. For nearly every significant Lithuanian creator, he represents a metaphorical Rubicon – a decisive threshold compelling them to define their relationship with his legacy, and the enigmatic aura and ideas of his creations.

Druskininkai, a timeless European destination, is renowned for its harmonious blend of natural beauty and intellectual vitality, which is further enriched by its uniquely vibrant aura. One can sense that this resort town not only inspires quality relaxation but also serves as a wellspring of creativity, as evidenced by its profound influence on M. K. Čiurlionis. The resort provided him with the opportunity to engage deeply with the broader world. The city of Druskininkai must continue to cultivate such opportunities that nurture the development of future geniuses.

“Touched by Čiurlionis” is the central idea that encompasses the broad platform of Čiurlionis’ artistic expressions, spanning painting, literature, music, theater, and dance. This concept connects people, traditions, nature, and other elements of culture. Accordingly, we envision the idea of Lithuania’s Capital of Culture not merely as an opportunity to illuminate new dimensions of the genius’ multifaceted creativity but also as a means to realize grand visions, ignite creative aspirations, and inspire the evolution of future art. We also aim to awaken spontaneous impulses of the creative spirit, ultimately sparking innovation and cultivating the next generation of talent in Druskininkai.

SYMPHONY OF THE DREAMS

The metaphysical depth and evocative power of M. K. Čiurlionis’ legacy in art, music, and literature serve as a revitalizing wellspring of creative inspiration, offering a source of exploration and influence for Lithuanian artists across generations. Inspired by this, and in collaboration with these artists and the tradition-preserving community of Druskininkai, we will bring to life a “Symphony of Dreams”.

This “symphony” will transcend the traditional boundaries of the genre, inspired by Čiurlionis’ commitment to experimentation and his defiance of conventional norms. It will pursue new means of artistic expression, blending time-honored traditions with innovative contemporary art projects. A multitude of diverse instruments – representing various generations, approaches, methods, forms, and aspirations – will harmonize and come to life in the symphony’s five parts.
